Tennessee football stock report following Week 7 of 2022
Stocks to buy
Running backs
Two Saturdays ago, Tennessee football’s running backs had over 200 yards on the ground. They still averaged over four and a half yards a carry against Alabama. All the talk surrounded Hendon Hooker to Jalin Hyatt, and Hooker’s running alone took some of the luster away from what the running backs were able to do.
However, no team had averaged even four yards against Alabama coming into the game. Jaylen Wright had 12 carries for 71 yards, one yard short of six yards a carry, and Jabari Small had 12 carries for 53 yards and a touchdown. The Small fumble on the exchange with Hooker may have hurt the stock, but this unit is balling right now.
Defensive coaching
All year, nobody has paid attention to how great of a job Tim Banks is doing. That has a lot to do with the points and yards the Vols are giving up, but the tempo of the offense, the personnel of the defense and the teams they are playing will call for that.
In this game, Banks once again had perfect blitz packages dialed up all day, and Young’s elite play was the only reason the Vols didn’t blow Alabama out. He’s a great defensive coordinator and continues to put that on display week in and week out.
