Kicking game

Two huge plays in the kicking game helped Tennessee football last weekend. Both were entirely lucky. The first was a punt by Paxton Brooks that Alabama muffed. Brooks’ punt only went 31 yards, and it was his only punt of the day, so if the fumble didn’t happen, he’d look a lot worse than he does right now.

Then there’s Chase McGrath. Remember when McGrath missed the extra point and made the game-winning field goal? He still missed the extra point, and the field goal was a knuckler from 40 yards out. He was lucky to send that through the uprights. As a result, there seems to be some real issues in this aspect of the game, so keep an eye on it.

Defensive tackles

It was more obvious that the edge rushers struggled against Bryce Young, but the defensive tackles didn’t get the push they usually do. Maybe this was because they were playing Alabama. What’s clear, though, is the Omari Thomas sack and the way they stopped the run was enough to keep this unit from getting too much smoke.

However, the defensive tackles probably could have done more to blow up plays, and Jahmyr Gibbs was effective for a reason. This is nitpicking to a degree, but Tennessee football could have had a better performance from Thomas and the rest of the crew in general.
