Tennessee football cements its spot atop SEC Power Rankings after Week 7
Defeated Florida Gators 45-35
Well, we know who the superior team is among the two with first-year head coaches who lost to Tennessee football. Although LSU lost to the Vols by a significantly larger margin, they pretty much handled Florida on the road, so Brian Kelly strikes the first blow in what could be an annual matchup between him and Billy Napier depending on the future 16-team SEC format.
Anyway, this is where football is not a science. Although LSU lost to the Vols in a much worse blowout than Florida did, that was because of a bunch of crazy plays early on that put them in a hole. Florida trailed 38-21 late and just happened to make a few big plays to nearly come back and win the game.
Overall, though, LSU appears to be the better team, and they are top 25 caliber. Technically, they still control their own destiny in the West, as their only loss is to an East team, so they could end up being a lot better than we thought. Again, Kelly could be building a dynasty down there.
We’ll find out just how legitimate this team is immediately, though, as they welcome Ole Miss to town for a huge game Saturday. Then they have a bye, and on the first Saturday of November, they host Alabama. Both teams are at home, so watch out. We could be talking about LSU winning the West soon enough.
