Tennessee football’s top five performers in 65-24 win vs. UT-Martin
2 carries, 12 yards, 2 TDs; 1 catch, 17 yards; 1-of-1, 66 yards, 1 TD
Josh Heupel’s creativity has been on full display with the way he has used Princeton Fant the past two weeks. Against the Alabama Crimson Tide, Tennessee football lined him up at fullback in the I-formation for a touchdown run. Nick Saban acknowledged his players had never seen that formation before, noting how much the game has changed.
He did it again here. Jabari Small had a touchdown run on the Vols’ first drive. However, after Ramel Keyton’s catch set them up at the one on the second drive, Heupel called Fant’s number for the same one-yard run. Then, later in the first half, Heupel lined Fant up in the offset I and had him take the ball for an 11-yard touchdown run.
As if that creativity wasn’t enough, Fant was used in the passing game on the next drive. Joe Milton III was in and threw a backwards pass to Fant who then made a perfect throw to Jalin Hyatt for a 66-yard touchdown. Yes, Fant was in on three touchdowns, none receiving.
That’s crazy for a tight end. He was bringing shades of the old fullback position back and really did put his versatility on display. Being in on three touchdowns is enough for us to put Fant on this list, and hey, he did have a key catch on 3rd and 3 on the Vols’ third scoring drive.
