It may not last, and this has nothing to do with projections. Tennessee football should be the clear-cut No. 1 team in the College Football Playoff and should’ve been the No. 1 team in both the AP and Coaches Polls. Their resume is the best in the nation right now, and last week’s 44-6 win over Kentucky solidified that.

Kentucky was the fifth team the Vols beat ranked in the top 25 when they beat them. UT also obliterated them. You can make the case that UK is no longer in the top 25, but the LSU Tigers are back in it, and the Vols blew them out 40-13 at Death Valley a few weeks ago.

Sure, the Pittsburgh Panthers look like an overrated win, but the Florida Gators could turn into a solid win, and UK will likely finish as one. Finally, they obviously have the best win of the year over Alabama. That win alone combined with the blowout win they had last weekend is enough to keep the Vols at No. 1 for right now.

If they beat Georgia on the road this weekend, Tennessee football will have almost automatically punched its ticket to the College Football Playoff. The Vols will still significantly be in the race with a close loss as well, so a lot is riding on Saturday. Until then, though, they should be No. 1.
