And here we are, the Game of the Century. There are two other SEC East games that remind us why the division is forgettable and a third involving an East team against an unranked SEC West team. Then we’ve got this, a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup in the AP Poll.
After scoring another blowout win, Tennessee football enters this game No. 1 in the inaugural 2022 College Football Playoff rankings. The Vols are No. 3 in the Coaches Poll and tied with the Ohio State Buckeyes for No. 2 in the AP Poll. It’s their highest combined ranking of a regular season game ever.
Georgia, meanwhile, comes in on the heels of a blowout win over Florida, one that got interesting late but was never really in doubt. They are No. 1 in both polls but No. 3 in the CFP. With that level of motivation, they may be ready to show the world who’s boss. Also, they need this win more, as the Oregon Ducks are their only signature victory on the season.
Prediction
The winner of this game wins the East and will be in the driver’s seat of the CFP. In fact, the winner punches their ticket probably automatically. However, the Vols can actually afford to lose and still go. That won’t be the case with UGA. Such pressure should favor the Dawgs.
However, Georgia is much more banged up, and there’s no reason Tennessee football can’t do to them what they did to Alabama in the passing game. The Vols are healthier now, and the Dawgs have played with fire for too long. As a result, yes, we’re going with the upset.
UGA plays a bit like Kentucky sometimes, where they don’t bring pressure and force you to move the ball. The Vols showed against UK that’s no problem for them. As a result, when the Dawgs do that Saturday, it’ll force the game to hit the under. However, Rocky Top still gets the upset.
