Staying on defense, Tennessee football needs elite play from its secondary. Mizzou isn’t dominant on that side of the ball, but if you’re not careful, they can catch you napping. That’s where the best playmaker for the Vols all year in the secondary comes onto the scene in Trevon Flowers.
It’ll be Flowers’ last game at Neyland Stadium, and it’s the perfect opportunity for him to come through with some big plays. Flowers is tied for the team lead in interceptions with two on the year, but he also shockingly leads the team in forced fumbles, also with two. Yes, he has produced four turnovers, including one last week at Georgia.
Throughout the injuries in the secondary this year, Flowers has been the one constant. Against physical offenses like Mizzou, it’s crucial for the safeties to stay in position on the back end. That allows the defense to be more aggressive closing the gaps up front, and often times the safeties will be asked to help with that.
As a result, Flowers and Jaylen McCollough will both be critical in this game, but Flowers is the bigger star of the two this year and the more experienced one. If the Vols are going to keep Mizzou from making it a game, he’s the one who has to stand out.
