Our first non-conference prediction of the day shockingly involves two Group of Five programs. Tennessee football head coach Josh Heupel’s old school goes up against the only other team to finish the season undefeated when the Vols won the 1998 national championship.

Gus Malzahn’s UCF Knights come into this game on a roll. Ranked No. 22 in the CFP and AP Poll and No. 21 in the Coaches Poll, they are two weeks removed from a huge win over the Cincinnati Bearcats, firmly putting them in place for Group of Five supremacy. A win in this game all but clinches their trip to a New Year’s Six bowl.

The same could be said, though, about the Tulane Green Wave. Outside of a fluke loss to the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, Willie Fritz’s team has been on a roll. They have a huge non-conference win at the Kansas State Wildcats and are ranked No. 17 in the CFP and Coaches Poll and No. 16 in the AP Poll.

Prediction

The win over Cincinnati was nice, but that was right after UCF lost to the East Carolina Pirates, and they squeaked by the Memphis Tigers. This team is playing with fire, and it’ll cost them at Tulane. Fritz’s offense is finally starting to hit its stride, so this game hits the over with Tulane covering.

Tulane: 35 UCF: 28 (Tulane -1; Over 54.5)
