Well, give Lane Kiffin’s team some credit. Conventional wisdom was that Ole Miss was overrated and playing way over their heads before last week, but they put up a fight against Alabama, even if they didn’t win. Losing clinched the SEC West for LSU, but it also proved that Ole Miss will stay in the running with Kiffin for as long as he’s there.

Although Tennessee football fans don’t miss him anymore with Josh Heupel there, it’s clear Kiffin can coach. Among ranked teams in the SEC, though, they belong at the bottom. Ole Miss is the only one of this group not to beat another member of the group, a huge deal.

As a result, they likely won’t be going to any New Year’s Six bowl game. Four is probably the max number of teams that could go to that, and losing to Alabama at home off a bye kills any credibility for the Rebels. That means this year is somewhat of a downgrade. However, a quarterback change makes it somewhat understandable.

For now, Ole Miss needs to focus on closing out the season right. They have a trip to Arkansas Saturday in a matchup that will be brutal given the Hogs’ desperation to reach a bowl game, and then they host a dangerous Mississippi State team in the Egg Bowl to close out the year.
