One of the most hard-fought series in the SEC in the 2010s is about to add another chapter. Every game from 2012 to 2018 was within one score during that time. Now, it involves Tennessee football trying to reach the College Football Playoff while the South Carolina Gamecocks try to take a step forward in Shane Beamer’s second season.
Josh Heupel’s team comes in ranked No. 5 across the board, having righted the ship after that tough loss at Georgia. They can’t win the East, but they can reach the playoff, and they played like it with a 66-24 win over Mizzou. Now, they have two road games to close out the season, and this is the tougher of the two, so they can’t let up.
On the other side, South Carolina has been hit with reality recently. After a 5-2 start and reaching the top 25, they lost to Mizzou, had to fight off Vanderbilt and got blown out by Florida. Still, an upset win here could prove they are a program on the rise and may put them in line for a return to the top 25, but they also have the Clemson Tigers after this game.
Prediction
There is a chance the Vols will have their mind elsewhere as their playoff hopes rest somewhat on the outcome of other games. Still, if you take a look at the matchups in this one, it shouldn’t matter. Barring three huge special teams plays in South Carolina’s favor, UT has the edge.
Key is the fact that South Carolina can’t stop the run at all, and Tennessee football’s entire offense is built on running it first. As a result, the Vols will pour it on the Gamecocks. After 100 yards rushing in the first quarter, Kentucky will cheat up, and that’s when they hit their big passing plays over the top. Take the over here, and the Vols cover easily.
