A first-year head coach with the LSU Tigers facing the UAB Blazers doesn’t bring up great memories on the bayou. Nick Saban lost to UAB his first year there back in 2000. However, a lot of things are different about the program now than then, when it was still an SEC punching bag.
Unlike 2000, LSU has won the SEC West in Brian Kelly’s first year. They clinched it with an ugly win over Arkansas last week, but a win is a win. Back to back victories over Ole Miss and LSU have propelled this team to No. 6 in the CFP and AP Poll and No. 7 in the Coaches Poll, and despite that 40-13 loss to Tennessee football, a playoff is possible.
On the other side, UAB is playing for bowl eligibility under interim head coach Bryant Vincent. Bill Clark announcing his retirement in the summer was a shock to the program, but they have handled it nicely to this point. Upsetting LSU to reach bowl eligibility may be what Vincent needs for the interim tag to be removed.
Prediction
UAB’s losing streak will extend to four games. Also, after surviging Arkansas, LSU returns home for a night game on ESPN2 knowing they have clinched the west. The momentum behind that will be huge, and they’ll roll to a dominating victory like we have never seen. Take them to win, and it hits the over because their offense just pours it on.
