What was a guaranteed blowout a week ago is all of a sudden going to be extremely interesting. Tennessee football heads to Nashville to visit the Vanderbilt Commodores, and the circumstances surrounding this game have completely flipped from what they were just last week.

The Vols, initially thinking about checkering Vanderbilt’s home stadium with their own fan base and a shot at the College Football Playoff, are now just trying to finish the season off the right way after a humiliating 63-38 loss at the South Carolina Gamecocks. They also don’t have their Heisman caliber quarterback.

On the other side, Vandy is all of a sudden playing to go to a bowl. Clark Lea’s team is coming off of two shocking upsets over the Kentucky Wildcats and Florida Gators, and at 5-6, they just have to beat their reeling in-state rival at home to get there. Could Tennessee football slip up again?

Tennessee Volunteers at Vanderbilt Commodores gambling odds

Despite all the issues facing Rocky Top, the Vols are still 14-point favorites in this game according to WynnBET. The over/under is set at 64, and the moneyline is Tennessee -555 and Vanderbilt +400. That’s probably much closer than it would’ve been a week ago, but UT is still expected to score in this game, even without Hendon Hooker.

Tennessee Volunteers at Vanderbilt Commodores prediction

This is truly a game that could go either way. The Vols could come out flat, having quit on the season because no playoff is on the table and Hooker is out, or they could come out angry and hoping to finish the season the right way. They have done both in the past.

One similarity to this game is 2016. A week before visiting Vandy, UT found out it wouldn’t win the SEC East, a goal at the beginning of the season. They were still playing that game with a chance to go to a New Year’s Six bowl, and Vandy was playing for a bowl berth. Vandy won.

Based on that, it would make sense to pick Vanderbilt in a shocker. However, if the Vols have the right mentality, they come out and dominate. If the alleged Jeremy Banks distraction, which we wrote about here, is behind them, they should be able to do just that.

We’re betting on Tennessee football putting that behind them and then going all out for Joe Milton III at quarterback. As a result, the Vols will cover, and the offense will roll. Take Tennessee -14. This will be Milton’s coming-out party against a weak defense, so take the Over 64. The score will look something like this: Tennessee 48 Vanderbilt: 27.
