Tennessee football’s top five performers in 56-0 win at Vanderbilt
2 sacks, 2.5 TFLs, 1 QB hurry, 4 tackles (3 solo)
A huge reason the secondary looked so much better in this game despite being so decimated was because of how Tennessee football’s pass rush performed. That unit didn’t show up at all last week, and it limited everything the Vols could do. Add in Jeremy Banks being out, and you can see why the South Carolina game happened.
Well, Banks returned, the defense somewhat reunited, and the pass rush decided to play a lot more aggressive. Tyre West had two tackles for a loss and a sack, Byron Young and Bryson Eason each had a tackle for a loss, Dominic Bailey assisted on a tackle for a loss with Bailey, and LaTrell Bumphus knocked down a pass.
However, Roman Harrison was by far the best player all night on the defensive line. His numbers speak for themselves. Harrison’s first sack came early in the second quarter. It was 3rd and 6, Vandy was trailing 14-0, and they were driving. Harrison brought down Mike Wright for a two-yard loss, and Vandy missed the ensuing field goal.
That play was huge for keeping Tennessee football in control of the game. Harrison’s second sack came early in the third quarter, and while the Vols were already up 35-0, it helped them stay in control. With such a meaningful stat and an elite stat line, Harrison was the biggest catalyst for this defensive turnaround, so he’s the player of the game.
