Josh Heupel’s system is natural to attract lots of skill players. As a result, Tennessee football should be trending for every high-profile athlete in the state, and the Vols are doing just that for one such 2024 prospect.
Boo Carter has the Vols in his top five. A four-star on Rivals, ESPN, 247Sports Composite and ON3 Consensus but a three-star on 247Sports and ON3, Carter hails from Chattanooga, Tenn., and attends Brainerd High School.
Joining Tennessee football on Carter’s list are the Ohio State Buckeyes, Michigan Wolverines, Oregon Ducks and Colorado Buffaloes. Yes, UT is the only SEC school. He announced all of the schools Tuesday afternoon with a video on Twitter.
Standing between 5’10” and 6’0″ while weighing in the range of 180 to 190 pounds, Carter is listed as an athlete everywhere except ON3, where he is listed as a safety. That’s ironic because his list came within minutes of 2024 Michigan safety Jacob Oden putting the Vols in his top five.
All signs point to him staying in the secondary, particularly if he chooses Rocky Top, but there is an opening for him to play running back. He also has the size to play that position in Heupel’s offense given the type of players Heupel targets there.
Either way, though, Carter would be a great pickup for the Vols, one who could make an impact right away. The Vols will clearly need more competition in the secondary in the future, and that still likely won’t be fully addressed by 2024, so if Carter chooses that side, he’ll be a huge help.
Currently, Tennessee football has the only 247Sports Crystal Ball prediction with a medium confidence interval, and the Vols are the ON3 favorite by a huge majority. They are also the majority favorite on the Rivals Fan Future Cast, so while it’s early, it seems like it will be shocking if they don’t land him.
