Could Tennessee Football’s Joe Milton III add to the Volunteers’ Heisman Trophy legacy?

With the Vols’ talented offense and Josh Heupel steering the ship, it’s only a matter of time before the prestigious award comes to Knoxville.

The Heisman Trophy is an annual award given to the best college football player in the United States. The award is named after John W. Heisman, a former college football player, and coach, and has been presented since 1935 by the Heisman Trust, a non-profit organization that promotes sportsmanship and supports amateur athletes. The trophy is a bronze statue of a football player in a stiff-arm pose and is a well-recognized symbol in college sports.

Some of the most legendary players in college football history have come close to winning the award, including Johnny Majors, who came in second in 1956, and Reggie White, who was the runner-up in 1983, both of whom played for the University of Tennessee. Peyton Manning, another Tennessee player, was a finalist for the award in 1997 but did not win it.

Winning the Heisman Trophy is considered one of the highest honors in college sports and is often a stepping stone to a successful career in the NFL.

Could Tennessee Football’s Joe Milton III win the Heisman Trophy?

On and off the field, Joe Milton continues to lead by example and is the glue that keeps this Tennessee Football team together. In the Orange & White game, he put on a show, completing 9 of 13 passes for 79 yards and a touchdown.

Milton also played in the Orange Bowl for the Volunteers due to a knee injury from starting quarterback Hendon Hooker. The former Michigan transfer was named Orange Bowl MVP after completing 19 of 28 passes for 251 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. He also ran for 5 yards on 11 carries.

At 20-1 odds, it’s worth a sprinkle at Joe Milton winning the Heisman Trophy next year. He would likely have to lead the Volunteers to the playoffs, which isn’t that unlikely considering they will probably be favored to win in 10 out of their 12 games next year and have a chance at upsetting the Georgia Bulldogs at home in Neyland Stadium. An 11-1 Tennessee team could easily make the playoffs and a Heisman Trophy for Milton.
