Tennessee football is undefeated against these FBS teams
Tennessee football vs the Mountain West
It probably shouldn’t surprise many people that Tennessee football doesn’t have a long history of playing teams out of the Mountain West. After all, most of the programs are on opposite sides of the country. However, when the Vols do play teams from that conference, they tend to have quite a bit of success. The program is undefeated against seven current Mountain West programs.
Colorado State: The Vols have gone up against the Rams four times over the years, though it’s been a little while since the two schools faced off. The clashes were pretty one-sided. UT won 28-7 in 1975, 42-0 in 1981, 49-3 in 1987, and then a closer game (17-14 in 1989).
Fresno State: Tennessee football has played the Bulldogs exactly once, about 20 years ago. In 2003, the Vols walked to a 24-6 victory.
Hawaii: The two schools met each other in the 1970s, and it certainly makes sense that the Rainbow Warriors wouldn’t want to take on the Volunteers again. Tennessee blew out Hawaii in both games, winning 34-2 in 1972 and 28-6 in 1975. No rematch in almost 50 years since.
UNLV: Speaking of blowouts in limited matchups. the Running Rebels got absolutely stomped both times they took on the SEC power. UT won their first matchup 62-3 in 1996 and then 42-17 in 2004.
New Mexico: The Lobos and Volunteers have met exactly twice, and New Mexico was relatively game the last time they faced off. Tennessee won a laugher 31-6 in 1983, but the Lobos played better when they rematched in 1986 and they only lost 35-21.
Utah State: The Aggies are yet another team that has faced off against Tennessee football once. Considering they lost 38-7, it’s not a shock they never played again.
Air Force: In 2006, the Falcons came two points away from missing this list, as they only lost 31-30. Their other loss was not nearly as close, as they got blown out by Tennessee football 34-13 in the 1971 Sugar Bowl.
