Tennessee football vs The Mac and Independents

The Tennessee football team is undefeated against six MAC squads. They’re also undefeated against one Independent team that spent a few short years in the MAC and that’s why I’ve lumped them in with this conference. Interestingly enough, while most of the teams on this long list are squads that haven’t played the Vols in decades, there are two MAC squads that have the distinction of getting blown out far more recently.

Akron: The Zips are 0-3 against UT and probably got all they wanted to handle when they were pounded by Hendon Hooker and company 63-6 last year. That whipping was almost 10 years to the day of a 47-26 shootout. All this started with Akron going down 52-9 in 1989.

Ball State: The Cardinals and Volunteers met for the first time ever in 2022, and that matchup went about how you’d expect, as the MAC squad got throttled 59-10.

Bowling Green: Tennessee football has been making the rounds a bit with the MAC lately. In 2021, the Vols took down the Falcons 38-6. That was a follow-up to a 2015 shootout that featured a final score of 59-30.

Buffalo: The Bulls are another MAC team that has faced off against Rocky Top once ever. They lost 41-10 in 2011.

Northern Illinois: The Huskies almost got a victory in the only time they’ve played Tennessee. Back in 2008, they just needed a little more offense to get over the hump in a 13-9 loss.

Ohio: The Bobcats have been surprisingly game the two times they’ve gone up against the SEC power. In 2009, they lost 34-23, and in 2016, they went down 28-19.

UMASS: Speaking of surprisingly close games by perennial also-rans, the Minutemen took on Tennessee football in 2017 and only lost 17-13.
