Tennessee football is undefeated against these FBS teams
Tennessee football vs the AAC and Conference USA
Regarding teams Tennessee football is undefeated against, I included both the AAC and CUSA in the same section because I dare you to name all the teams in CUSA and the AAC without looking and get them all right. The degree of difficulty increases, considering that quite a few of the teams have played in both conferences at one time.
UAB: The Blazers and Vols have faced off quite a few times, which isn’t all that surprising considering UAB is in SEC territory. It’s also not surprising UT is 5-0. The scores have been almost as one-sided, as Tennessee won 37-13 in 1998, 17-10 in 2005, 35-3 in 2008, and 30-7 in 2019. There was one very close contest in 2010 when UAB took Tennessee football to overtime and lost 32-29.
East Carolina: It’s a bit weird that the Pirates and Volunteers faced off against each other only once. That 1995 game ended with a 27-7 ECU loss.
Charlotte: Charlotte hasn’t been in the FBS long at all, so it’s not surprising that they’ve only played Tennessee once and lost 14-3 in 2018. It’s a safe bet that realizing they only lost by 11 is a badge of honor.
SMU: The Mustangs’ 28-3 loss in 1970 is the only time they’ve had the misfortune of running across the SEC power.
Temple: The Owls’ matchups against Tennessee go back aways. They first lost in 1944, 27-14. The “followed up” that loss in 1990 with a 41-20 defeat.
Tulsa: The Golden Hurricane and Volunteers have had a colorful series, though it’s been dead for decades. The two teams faced off in the 1943 Sugar Bowl, which ended in a 14-7 score. They also played in the 1965 Bluebonnet Bowl, which ended with a score of 27-6. Tennessee is 5-0 all-time, but hasn’t played Tulsa since 1974.
Western Kentucky: The two squads played a couple of times when the Hilltoppers were in the Sun Belt. Things didn’t go well for WKU, who lost 63-7 in 2019 and 52-20 in 2013.
Middle Tennessee State: Like WKU, MTSU played the Vols when they were in the Sun Belt. They were a bit more of a contest, as they lost 26-3 in 2002 and again 24-0 in 2011.
UTEP: Texas-El Paso has been the “beneficiary” of some whuppings that include a 1986 26-16 score, a 56-0 1990 loss and a 24-0 2018 defeat.
Louisiana Tech: LaTech has faced Tennessee football twice in the two programs’ history and been outscored 92-17.
