Tennessee football vs. the rest of Power 5

The Tennessee football team is actually surprisingly good against some of the bigger programs in the country. Perhaps unsurprisingly, there aren’t a ton of Power 5 programs that they are undefeated against.

Indiana: The Vols and Hoosiers have met up twice in bowl games, and both were pretty exciting games. Indiana lost in the 1988 Peach Bowl 27-22 and 23-22 in the 2020 Gator Bowl.

Louisville: The Cardinals are not just 0-5 against the Volunteers, but they really haven’t given much of a fight. The Tennessee football team has won those five games by an average of 47-7.

Michigan: It’s certainly interesting that the Vols are undefeated against the two teams that are currently the best in the Big 10. Of course, one reason they’re undefeated is they’ve made the most of their opportunity. Tennessee beat the Wolverines 45-17 in the 2002 Citrus Bowl.

Minnesota: The Golden Gophers faced off against the SEC power in the 1986 Liberty Bowl, and it was a close contest. Minny ended up losing 21-14.

Northwestern: The Wildcats continue a Big Ten tradition of facing off against the Volunteers in Bowl games only. They’re 0-2 against UT, thanks to a 48-28 loss in the 1997 Citrus Bowl and a 45-6 Outback Bowl defeat in 2016.

Ohio State: The Citrus Bowl is a fun place for the Tennessee football team to dropkick Big 10 squads. They upended the Buckeyes in the 1996 Citrus Bowl with a 20-14 victory.

Syracuse: The Orange are 0-3 against the SEC power, but they’ve played them close more often than not. Syracuse lost 18-12 in the 1966 Gator Bowl. Then they lost by a single point, 34-33, in a 1998 regular season game. Then, they got stomped 33-9 in 2001. It happens.

Utah: The Pac-12 rising power has had its struggles against Tennessee football. Maybe that’s why they played in 1975, 1979, and most recently in 1984. The Utes are on the short end of an average 39-15 loss.

Wisconsin: Like the other Big Ten schools on this list, Tennessee football has only squared off against Wisconsin in bowl games, but they’ve made the most of those matchups. The Badgers lost 28-21 in the 1981 Garden State Bowl. They then lost again 21-17 in the 2008 Outback Bowl.
