The WNBA could be coming to the Volunteer State after the City of Nashville submitted a bid to receive an expansion team. It is only fitting that the WNBA come to the Volunteer State, which is home to Lady Vols basketball legend Pat Summitt and the Women's College Basketball Hall of Fame.
The Tennessee Summitt's official social media accounts announced their bid to bring the WNBA to the Volunteer State, which was supported by former Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam.
The potential professional women's basketball team would join the Memphis Grizzlies and Nashville Predators as Tennessee's professional sports teams.
Pat Summitt built women's basketball in Tennessee from the ground up, spending 30 years as the Lady Vols basketball coach. She put together several legendary teams and was a big part of sending elite talent to the WNBA.
From Tamika Catchings to Kara Lawson and Candace Parker to Rickea Jackson, the Lady Vols have sent 46 players to be drafted into the WNBA, with 31 players playing for Summitt.
Parker is one of four other partners for the WNBA expansion team. She is joined by Peyton Manning, Tim McGraw, and Faith Hill.
"Tennessee is the DNA of everything women's basketball stands for. I'm excited to be a part of the group working to bring a WNBA team to the state and honor Coach Summitt's legacy," former Lady Vols star Candace Parker shared, supporting the move.
Lady Vols and WNBA supporters widely support the bid throughout the Volunteer State, but some fans are disappointed in the color choice, based on the social media page. It looks like the team will use light blue and gold as its main colors.
These could be temporary colors until the team is officially a member of the WNBA, but fans were hoping for Summitt blue and orange, similar to Lady Vols basketball.
