This is a loss that's going to haunt No. 6 Tennessee basketball for a little while, as the Volunteers had No. 1 Auburn on the ropes in one of the best games of the year. First off, we'll give credit to the Tigers for being able to close things out and win this Top 10 matchup.
However, let's be real here, Bruce Pearl and Co. also got plenty of help from the officials late in the action. One play in particular had Rick Barnes furious. It was when Felix Okpara was called for a travel, but he was clearly fouled. Take a look at this clip below - how did the officials miss this?
Rick Barnes was not happy over a brutal missed call in Tennessee vs. Auburn
Had the officials made the right call, Okpara would have gone to the free-throw line. At the time, Tennessee was up 51-49 and Okpara would have had the chance to extend the team's lead. However, now everyone is just left wondering what could have been.
Then in the final seconds, Zakai Ziegler saw his game-winning 3-point attempt rim out, with Johni Broome coming down with the rebound. However, it sure looked like he walked too. Had the refs seen this, Tennessee would have gotten the ball back with one last try at a game-winner. Instead, nothing was called and the Auburn stands went wild:
That walk is clear as day, yet there was no whistle. Who knows if Tennessee would have been able to tie things up or score the game-winner if given one more possession, but again, we'll never know. Props to both teams for an incredible game, but these two mistakes from the refs were awful.
With the loss, Tennessee is now 17-3 on the season and 4-3 in SEC play. Auburn improved to 18-1 overall and 6-0 in conference play. Despite the loss, Barnes said he was proud of his players for the fight they showcased. Still, though, it feels like this was a game that should have had a different outcome.
