Faizon Brandon's fall camp confidence keeps Tennessee's QB battle moving in one direction

Fall camp is here for Tennessee and Josh Heupel and there's no question that the quarterback battle is a major focus for the coaching staff and fans alike. While Faizon Brandon and George MacIntyre very much went through the motions for the opening day of action, that doesn't mean heads weren't turned.

That's because both quarterbacks spoke to the media, with Brandon's body language alone sticking out a bit. Brandon knows this is going to be a tough QB battle, but he's ready to push for the job despite being a baby-faced 18 year old. As for G-Mac, he didn't come off quite as confident, and he also kind of gave off the vibe that maybe, just maybe the writing might be on the wall for him.

With Brandon in particular, he made it quite clear that he has nothing but respect for MacIntyre, with the two having a solid relationship both on and off the field. With that said, they're both fighting for the same spot, with the freshman QB hoping he can live up to his major hype as well.

“It’s definitely very competitive between us two,” Brandon said to open up fall camp. “There are some things he can learn from me, and I can learn from him. I take stuff from him all the time - it applies to my game. But I would say we talk in the facility, and I feel like we have a pretty good relationship, but you know we’re competing at the end of the day. It’s nothing bad between us.”

As for MacIntyre, he strongly hinted that he has seen some of the outside noise from the fanbase, with plenty of people pushing for Brandon to win the job. Brandon signed with Tennessee ranked the No. 3 quarterback in the country per the 247Sports Composite, with folks strongly believing he has a higher ceiling with UT over MacIntyre, who is now in his second fall camp with the program.

“No, I definitely try to stay off of it,” MacIntyre said of social media and trying to block out any outside noise. “I don’t have as much social media as I used to. Obviously I’ll still see it and hear it every now and then, but try to stay off of it for the most part.”

Heupel isn't tipping his hand one way or the other, making it quite clear that no final decision on his starter will be made until potentially midway through fall camp. Soon enough, though, the veteran coach will need to make a tough call leading up to the Sept. 5 showdown against Furman.

Both quarterbacks have the tools necessary to help Tennessee impress this year, with MacIntyre having the advantage of spending an extra season on campus. While that might help him, Brandon enrolled early, went through spring practice, and showed flashes of brilliance too. No one will have this job handed to them, and Brandon's 5-star ranking is now thrown out the window.

Keeping all of that in mind, Tennessee broke the bank to bring in Brandon to be the quarterback of the future, and naming him QB1 will be beneficial for '26, and the long haul. MacIntyre is still doing all he can to be the guy for Heupel, but the uphill climb could prove to be too tall for him - and Brandon's confidence already is something that can't be ignored either.
