The adjustment from high school ball to college has been an easy one for Tennessee QB Faizon Brandon thus far. Despite graduating early, Brandon looked nothing like an early-enrollee freshman during spring ball. Fast forward to the eve of fall camp, and the 5-star signal-caller quite literally looks like a new man.
Thanks to new Director of Football Sports Performance, Derek Owings, we were all given a close-up look at the body transformations for several of Tennessee's biggest stars. This included Brandon, who has, per Owings, put on 19.5 pounds of lean mass since making the move to Knoxville. This is major for UT for several different reasons:
Even more impressing...

Faizon Brandon's body transformation shows he's both physically and mentally ready to lead the Vols
So, why is this important? When Brandon first made the move to campus after signing with the Vols, he was checking in at 6-4, 200 pounds. He was a bit skinny, but we all had a feeling that with the right workout regimen and nutrition program, Brandon would be able to put on some needed weight and size.
He's done just that. On top of that, this speaks to Brandon bringing his hard hat to work every single day and being in on his grind to improve. You don't put on nearly 20 pounds without having the right mindset and buying into what Tennessee is trying to get done for the future. This is a bit of a statement from Brandon, and a great one.
The hype surrounding the North Carolina native is quite high, as he's going to be in a fall camp battle with second-year quarterback George MacIntyre for the starting job. From our chair, Brandon should be the no-brainer pick for head man Josh Heupel, as he's got a much higher ceiling than MacIntyre. Still, nothing will be finalized until mid-August, it seems at the earliest.
Brandon was ranked the No. 3 quarterback in the country for the 2026 class, earning a 5-star status too. The hope is that he'll have a different type of stay in Knoxville compared to the last 5-star QB Heupel brought in: Nico Iamaleava. While Iamaleava helped lead the Vols to the College Football Playoff, he left the program ahead of the '25 season to play for hometown UCLA.
That was devastating, but Joey Aguilar was a joy to watch, and now several signs are pointing to Brandon being the guy moving forward. MacIntyre is, of course, going to do everything possible to prevent that from happening, but again, our gut tells us that Brandon will lead the offense out onto the field once the season-opener against Furman arrives.
And if that does happen, countless eyes are going to be on the youngster to see if he can deliver for Heupel despite being a true freshman. There will be some ups and downs for him, but Brandon looking like a new QB speaks to how ready he'll be both physically and mentally. The future is bright for this kid, no doubt.
