Former Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker could be on the move this offseason after not breaking through as the Detroit Lions No. 2 quarterback. After two seasons in Detroit, the Lions could look to trade him as capital with the NFL Draft around the corner.
Hooker has been the No. 3 quarterback for the Lions since being a third-round draft pick in 2023. It is unlikely Hooker will become the starting quarterback for the Lions anytime in the future, so it could be beneficial for both parties to move in a different direction.
He has one year remaining on his rookie contract and will likely have to look for a new home by trade if he wants to see the field consistently before his first NFL contract ends.
Former NFL quarterback and ESPN Tim Hasselbeck argues that Hooker and Detroit should move on this offseason and move the quarterback to a team looking to fill the position.
"I'll throw out a different name," said Hasselbeck on Monday. "With Aaron Glenn being there and the way things have gone in Detroit, is Hendon Hooker available? Is there a way to get Hendon Hooker in-house? If for some reason the people that were around him there [in Detroit] felt like he was somebody that could turn into a starting quarterback."
Coincidentally, the New York Jets are likely to be looking for a quarterback after reports that they won't be bringing back Aaron Rodgers.
This could be a good fit for Hooker as he has some familiarity with the Jets' new head coach Aaron Glenn, who used to be the Lions defensive coordinator.
It's unlikely the Jets would prioritize Hooker as they will be in the market for another franchise quarterback after going through several quarterbacks in the past decade, but it would be a valuable opportunity for Hooker to gain some playing experience.
