Tony Vitello has produced several MLB rising stars in his time at Tennessee, and former Vols outfielder Drew Gilbert is making his case to become the next VFL to make his MLB debut.
Gilbert is currently in AAA playing for the Syracuse Mets, the New York Mets' AAA affiliate. He didn't start the season on fire but has consistently hit in the 200s this year over 71 games, including batting .243 with 11 home runs and 41 RBIs.
Over the past week, he has taken off, though, including hitting four home runs over the past five games while hitting for a .318 batting average and .400 slugging percentage over that same period.

The Houston Astros drafted Gilbert, and Astros general manager Dana Brown believed Gilbert could be the starting center fielder in 2023. So, it's no surprise he's breaking out in AAA, waiting for his chance with the Mets.
Gilbert was known for his powerful bat while on Rocky Top, hitting .362 with 21 doubles, 11 home runs, and 70 RBIs in his final season at Tennessee. As a result, he earned All-American honors along with All-SEC, SEC All-Defensive Team, and SEC Tournament MVP honors.
He is currently the Mets' No. 9 overall prospect in the organization and is looking to break through and earn his MLB call-up, but the Mets outfield is currently loaded with players.
The Mets currently have a handful of players rotating in the outfield, and they are likely not going anywhere anytime soon, including Brandon Nimmo, Jeff McNeil, Tyrone Taylor, Starling Marte, and Juan Soto.
It should only be a matter of time before Gilbert is given a shot in the Big Leagues. If he continues to hit like this at the plate, there is nothing the Mets can do other than call him up and give him an opportunity to become the Mets' center fielder.
