Never in a million years did Tennessee or NFL fans expect Jermod McCoy to fall to Day 3 of the NFL Draft after being mocked in the first round just a week ago. It’s a tough situation, especially because he clearly has the talent to succeed at the next level. His slide is costing him a significant amount of money, which makes it even more difficult to watch.
McCoy tore his ACL last January, but cartilage issues remain in the knee, and teams are scared off by the possibility that another surgery may be required.
Yahoo Sports' Charles Robinson has some inside intel on the situation and it sounds anything but good. He said:
"I had one team tell me that if there is a severe slip, it's because there are some that are taking the position that if this next surgery, which would likely knock him out for the entirety of a year. If this next surgery is not successful, it will effectively end his career.
On ther bright side, the most interesting thing that Robinson brought up is who could draft McCoy, as he said:
"One other piece of information. The interesting thing here too is kind of the foremost surgeon now who deals with these bone plugs, it's Dan Cooper, who's the Cowboys team doctor. So somehow if you see the Cowboys end up being the team that does the dice rolling on it, it's because they have the foremost expert on their staff."

The Dallas Cowboys could take a chance on Jermod McCoy
What Robinson said is certainly interesting. The Dallas Cowboys have some of the top medical expertise when it comes to this type of injury, so if they take a chance on McCoy, it would be because they fully understand the situation. Even more intriguing, the Cowboys hold three fourth-round picks and a seventh-round pick, giving them plenty of flexibility to take that risk.
There's no question that for McCoy’s sake, you hope he gets picked as early as possible today, because with each round he falls, he continues to lose money. As he showed in 2024, he’s one of the top cornerbacks in this draft, he just needs his opportunity. Plus, in reality, the odds of a day three pick being in the league for more than two years are around 50%, so whatever team is willing to take a chance on McCoy isn't even making a major risk.
Someone needs to take a gamble on McCoy today. It could pay off mightily down the road.
