Joey Aguilar had a lot of doubters heading into the 2025 college football season, but over and over, he continues to prove the doubters wrong as he shows how well he can run Josh Heupel's up-tempo offense.

Aguilar led the Vols to another quick start, putting up 21 points in the first ten minutes of the game and giving the Tennessee defense a three-score lead to play with against the UAB offense.

While Aguilar’s day is going to be cut short on Saturday, he continues to show off his accuracy, completing 9-of-12 passes for 148 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Aguilar has also done a good job sharing the ball when he drops back to pass. Mike Matthews leads the offense through two quarters with 53 yards and one touchdown, followed by Braylon Staley with 50 yards, Chris Brazzell with 40 yards and one touchdown, and Miles Kitselman with 27 yards.

Through Aguilar's four starts, he has been accurate and consistent, totaling 1,085 passing yards and 11 touchdowns so far this season.

Heupel also gave some credit to Aguilar (or maybe threw a little shade at a former quarterback) earlier this week when asked about how the offense is executing early in the season so far, specifically when it comes to connecting on deep passes.

"Well, we certainly tried [to throw deep passes] last year, too," Heupel shared. "But you know, historically, being able to throw the football vertically down the field has been one of our strong points, and creating explosive plays in the pass game.

"I think it all plays together, from protection to wide receiver, playing with discipline, winning at the line of scrimmage, going and making plays down the field. And then quarterback certainly being accurate with the ball down the field, too."

The Vols' offense continues to impress, regardless of the opponent, largely thanks to Aguilar. It doesn't matter if Tennessee is facing a non-conference Power 4 opponent like Syracuse, a Group of 5 team like UAB, or SEC rival and one of the best defenses in the country, Georgia. Joey Aguilar is going to show out and prove he can be one of the best quarterbacks in the country.
