It really felt like it was only a matter of time before this news broke. That's right, with the season-opener for Tennessee and Josh Heupel coming on Sept. 5, it was time for the veteran coach to name his starting quarterback. And with that, it's the Faizon Brandon show moving forward. This had been in the works since the spring, and Heupel just made it official.
Pete Thamel was the one to break the news, and it ushers in a new era of Tennessee football for everyone to look forward to in Knoxville. Brandon signed with the Vols last winter ranked five stars and the No. 3 quarterback in the country. Now, he'll be ready to live up to the hype, but there's also going to be a ton of pressure on him to have a different story than what we just saw from Nico Iamaleava.

Tennessee naming Faizon Brandon its starting QB comes with a bit of risk
Iamaleava, of course, was the last 5-star QB to sign with the Vols, even helping guide Tennessee to the College Football Playoff in 2024. Unfortunately, he entered the transfer portal last spring in a major shocker, being one-and-done as the starter for Heupel. That left a sour taste in countless mouths, but the hope is that Brandon will be the guy to get the program back to the CFP, with a deep run to follow.
Throughout the spring and fall camp, Brandon was in a heated battle with second-year signal-caller George MacIntyre for the starting job. MacIntyre impressed, but he was never able to separate himself from Brandon - it truly felt like the two were neck-and-neck, and Heupel's comments in recent weeks reflected that.
With that being the case, Heupel had no choice but to go with his 5-star freshman, as the ceiling with Brandon running the show seems to be higher, too.
That doesn't mean things are going to go perfectly for the Vols and Brandon this campaign. With him being an 18-year-old true freshman, there are, of course, going to be some 'rookie mistakes' for the youngster this season. The Tennessee faithful are going to have to prepare themselves for them.
With that risk, however, comes an electric playmaker who has a rocket for a right arm and can also make plays with his legs. Brandon has flashed signs of brilliance throughout camp, with his deep ball alone being pretty dang impressive to watch. It also helps that he has built chemistry with Braylon Staley, Mike Matthews and others.
Look for DeSean Bishop to be a monster for the ground game, which will also help out Brandon in a major way. The time is now for the young man to take the reins of the offense and remind everyone what made him such an elite prospect. Heupel clearly has a ton of belief in Brandon's game, and he'll need to thank him for said belief by playing well beyond his years. It will all start with the season-opener right around the corner.
