Of all the outlandish ideas for a Tony Vitello replacement, this one surely takes the cake. With Vitello off to take over as manager for the San Francisco Giants, plenty of Tennessee baseball supporters are essentially begging Danny White to give the job to associate head coach Josh Erlander.
Tennessee baseball has obvious move to make with Tony Vitello off to the Giants
However, other names are popping up, including Curt Schilling. Yes, that Curt Schilling. Seemingly out of nowhere, Buster Olney reported on Wednesday night that Schilling has high interest in the opening and the former superstar MLB hurler confirmed that on his Twitter account. Why in the world would White even consider this, though?
Very interested. What an incredible program to potentially be a part of. @Vol_Sports https://t.co/zRb58o3oqu

Curt Schilling interested in the Tennessee job is as wild as it sounds
Retired life got you a little bored, Curt? Schilling was a complete and total force on the mound during his incredible 20-year career in the bigs. He was a six-time All-Star and he won 216 games, sporting a career 3.46 ERA. He has three World Series rings too.
So, yes, the guy knows a thing or two about winning at the highest level. However, no, no, no, no - oh and one more time, no. White will obviously know better (we hope!) than to bring in a big-name guy for his first ever head coaching gig. Sorry, Curt, but this job is not for you.
The same can't be said for Elander, Mark Wasikowski, Rob Vaughn, Kevin Schnall and others. Bringing in someone to replace Vitello is not going to be easy, as Tony V was a rockstar on campus and he was able to make history with the Vols while he was in town.
White knows this, which is why he is going to have to absolutely NAIL this next hire. Elander is going to prepare for an interview and work to prove to White that he's the right man for the job. If White decides to go in another direction, he'll work hard to poach a veteran coach from a different powerhouse program. Those two options are going to make the most sense. Listening to Schilling's push on social media to be considered? Never going to happen.
