Nate Ament has been one of the best freshmen in the nation this season, averaging 17.4 points per game, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game. The 6-foot-10 forward is a legitimate NBA Draft prospect, with many mock drafts projecting him somewhere in the top 10. What makes it even more impressive is that Ament himself is also projected as a top-10 pick in one of the deepest draft classes in recent memory.
Ament coming to Tennessee and playing under Barnes has similar vibes to Kevin Durant and Barnes nearly 20 years ago. Durant was a more prolific scorer than Ament as a freshman, but both are versatile, talented, tall, and lanky forwards.
ESPN's Sam Block listed out all of the elite talent in next year's draft and called it the best draft class since 2003, which is widely regarded as the best NBA Draft class ever. 2003 featured Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade, David West, and Kyle Korver. I mean, this class already has three Hall of Famers plus Lebron, who is potentially the greatest basketball player to ever step foot on earth,

Nate Ament would be a top-3 pick any other year
Even more impressive: in a different draft class, Ament would almost certainly be a top-three pick, and he could even go No. 1 overall. That’s just how good he is. I don't think it's crazy to say he would have gone number one overall in the 2024 draft class. Last year, with Cooper Flagg in 2025, he wouldn't have been picked number one, but top-three would have definitely been in play.
The most exciting part about Ament as a prospect is that he has no glaring weakness in his game. Yes, physically, he will need to get stronger and fight through contact better, but he can score, pass, dribble, defend, rebound, and lead. It’s a trait NBA teams will love about the young forward, and he’s just scratching the surface of what he can become as a basketball player.
I'm really excited to see how Ament's game evolves over the next few years and see how he blossoms as a hooper.
