Former Tennessee baseball pitcher makes first MLB All-Star Game
Tennessee baseball alum Garrett Crochet was named to the 2024 MLB All-Star Game on Sunday. Major League Baseball announced that Crochet would be one of 12 pitchers representing the American League in the Midsummer Classic later this month.
The full roster for the All-Star Game has been revealed, and Crochet will be the lone VFL heading to Texas for the Midsummer Classic this season. He is the first Vol to earn a trip to the All-Star Game since Yan Gomes in 2018 and the eighth Vol ever to accomplish the feat.
Crochet has been one of the best pitchers in the league this year on one of the MLB's worst teams. He has been the lone highlight for the Chicago White Sox, earning six of their 26 wins halfway through the season.
He has more than tripled his career WAR this year as a starter and has also recorded a 3.06 ERA with 146 strikeouts on the year.
Crochet also set a pretty amazing feat this year, being the only pitcher since at least 1901 to record more than 140 strikeouts and less than 20 walks in his first 18 career starts.
While this is his first year as a starter, it's his fourth year in the MLB, and he has excelled as the White Sox's ace. With his great start to the season, he will be rewarded with a trip to Arlington, Texas, as an All-Star for the first time in his career.
Crochet is one of 32 players across the league that will be first time All-Stars. If he continues to dominate throughout the season he could find himself as a fruntrunner for the AL Cy Young this fall.
The 2024 MLB All-Star Game will be hosted by the Texas Rangers in Arlington, Texas. The Midsummer Classic will be on July 16 at Globe Life Field at 8 PM ET on FOX.
