Former Tennessee football offensive lineman calls out Vols offense
Tennessee football and Josh Heupel's offense have been called many things: youth league, a gimmick offense, and not translatable to the NFL. One thing it hasn't been called is slow, or at least slower than Kentucky's offense—until now.
Former Vols offensive lineman Gerald Mincey, who transferred to Kentucky this past offseason, has taken shots at his former teammates and the football program since leaving Rocky Top for Lexington. He isn't stopping with the season less than 48 hours away as he calls out the Vols offense.
"It's just the same, but a little worse," said Mincey when comparing Kentucky's offense to Tennessee. "We've gotta run outside zone to the right, and then we've gotta hurry up to the ball. When we had the scrimmages, we saw that we could actually catch the defense off guard, stress the defense out, and then throw it over the top.
"We just all bought into the system. And we all bought into what it takes to prepare to have our offense — our rule is just to be the No. 1 offense in the SEC. I think we have a good group of guys right now that we can do that [with], and we just gotta keep working."
While opposing fans criticize Tennessee's offense, it seems like more and more teams are moving toward the Art Briles-style offense.
Mincey said Kentucky's offense is "probably a little faster" than Tennessee's, and that's because everyone has bought into the system, even as he continues to criticize his former program and teammates.
He continues to give Heupel and the Vols plenty of ammunition for their game against Kentucky on November 2. Tennessee has dominated the series for decades, but Mincey is confident 2024 is the Cats' year.
