We're counting down the days until football time in Tennessee again, and with that comes the annual release of the Tennessee football depth chart -OR- roster. This depth chart/roster gives fans an idea of what the Vols will look like to start the season, but it seems like things are still fluid as of right now.

It could be that the Vols don't want to tip their cap to the illustrious Chattanooga Mocs or that Tennessee coaches still haven't decided what the depth chart will look like heading into the first game of the football season.

The 2024 depth chart comes fully equipped with starters or potential starters for Tennessee's early-season opponents to prepare for. Along with the traditional 11 starters on both sides of the ball, the Vols have also tagged 34 other plays as potential starters.

Tennessee's first depth chart of the 2024 season answers some questions, like who will backup Nico? The Tennessee coaching staff seems to be awarding Gaston Moore the QB2 job, while freshman Jake Merklinger will be QB3 heading into Week One.

But there are also still plenty of questions that need to be answered, thanks to Heupel's notorious "-or-" designation, where he does not explicitly state who is starting or backing up a specific position.

Almost all front seven on defense have been listed as potential starters, while six receivers have been listed as potential starters. It will be interesting to see who the Vols start at certain positions, how often they rotate, and who gets the bulk of the snaps by the second and third quarters.

At that point, hopefully, the game will be out of hand, and Tennessee's starters and potential starters can rest and prepare for their Week Two game against North Carolina State in Charlotte.
