Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes and locker room leader Zakai Zeigler have developed a unique relationship over their four years together at Rocky Top.
Barnes molded Zeigler into the best defender in the SEC, being named SEC Defensive Player of the Year twice, and has become the heartbeat of Tennessee's basketball program.
Zeigler has played brilliantly in the SEC Tournament, including Tennessee's quarterfinals and semifinals games. His performance is the primary reason the Vols are in the SEC Championship.
The two's bond has developed into more than an on-court relationship, and each has permanently impacted the other's life.
"I really don't know where I would be," Zeigler said postgame. "I was thinking about quitting basketball around that time. I am thankful and blessed that I was given this opportunity, and the Lord has brought me a long way."
Zeigler has gone through some rough times while at Tennessee, including his mom's home burning down in New Jersey. Zeigler and Barnes' bond has undoubtedly grown because of the tough moments Zeigler has persevered through while at Tennessee.
Barnes was asked postgame what his relationship with Zeigler meant to him and the Tennessee basketball program, and he was visibly emotional in answering the question.
"Well, it makes me want to cry," Barnes said emotionally. "I've said before, I can't even imagine life without him. If you could have been in the huddle with us today, you would understand why because he was outstanding.
"The way he kept everybody calm [after blowing the lead] and locked in is why he is Zakai Zeigler. He has been a great blessing to me and I just thank God for bringing our lives together."
Barnes and Zeigler have developed a bond unique in today's athletics era. Not every player can take hard coaching and love the way Barnes delivers, but Zeigler has done it perfectly while at Tennessee.
Barnes also mentioned at the Big Orange Tipoff Club earlier this year that if it wasn't for Zeigler, he didn't know if he would still be coaching.
That is a huge compliment to Zeigler and a credit to his impact on Barnes and the Tennessee basketball program.
Barnes and Zeigler will look to close out their final SEC Tournament with a win in the championship game. Tennessee and Florida will face off in the SEC Championship on Sunday at 1:00 PM ET.
