On a Sunday where it’s been nothing but bad news for Tennessee Vols fans, at least Rick Barnes could provide some good news for the fan base after the loss to Michigan in the Elite Eight.
All signs pointing to Justin Gainey leaving Tennessee with latest report
Postgame, Barnes was asked the question if he is 100% committed to coming back to coach Tennessee next year. Barnes said, without a question, “I am.” This is a big development for Tennessee next season, as they can run it back with a future Hall of Famer.
Rick Barnes confirms he’s coming back to Tennessee for 2026-27 season
Well, if there is any positive to take away from today, it’s that the Vols won’t be in the hunt for a new head coach. With Barnes confirming he will be back he now will take a look at how he can build this roster into a Final Four contender. The Vols bring back a lot of good young pieces from this year's team, but they could use a couple of high-end portal players. Given that Barnes is already 71 years old, he likely won't be coaching too much longer, so a Final Four needs to happen soon.
Looking at the bigger picture, I think that point guard is a position that the Vols need to address. Running it back with Ethan Burg and Troy Henderson just doesn’t seem ideal. It’s not that they aren’t good players long term, but both players didn’t play much this year, and I think the team could really benefit from a veteran option.
The Vols also need more shot creators in general. The Tennessee defense and rebounding identity have gotten them far, but not over the hump. It maye be wise for Tennessee to sacrifice some defense for a little more explosiveness on offense. On a bad day for Tennessee basketball fans, at least it's ending on a good note with Barnes returning for next season.
