There's a ton of concern regarding starting Tennessee safety Edrees Farooq right now after a fall camp scare that has everyone talking. On Friday, it was announced that Farood suffered a lower-body injury, and that he was taken to the hospital for further examination. With the season-opener less than a month away, this is not what new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles wants to be seeing.

According to GoVols247 reporter Patrick Brown, who was all over this story, "Farooq was seen sitting up on a cart as he was loaded into an ambulance while Tennessee continued its seventh practice of preseason camp."

We don't want to speculate on just how serious this injury is for Farooq or how much time he's going to miss, but the timing truly could not be worse for Josh Heupel and Knowles. There have been some major hits for Tennessee on defense this offseason, and losing a standout defensive back for any time would be a big-time blow.
Not long ago, news broke that rising linebacker Jaedon Harmon suffered a torn ACL during practice, meaning his 2026 campaign is over before it could even get started. On top of that, Miami DB transfer Jadais Richard is also out for the year due to an upper-body injury. Oh, and no one has forgotten about 5-star pass-rusher Chaz Coleman being medically disqualified and no longer being with the Vols.
Add in this worry for Farooq and it just stinks for Tennessee as a whole. In 2025 for UT, the 6-0, 200-pounder emerged as a steady presence in the secondary for Heupel and former DC Tim Banks, posting 76 total tackles, two interceptions, and four forced fumbles. The expectation is that the junior will be ready to take a big leap in '26.
For now, though, we've got to wait and see just how bad this leg injury is for Farooq. You've got to feel pretty bad for him too, as Farooq knows just how important of a piece he's going to be for the Vols moving forward. Again, we don't want to speculate on what happened, or how long he's going to be out for, but it's a major worry for a secondary that doesn't have a ton of solid depth leading up to Week 1.
