Tony Vitello has finally decided on the San Francisco Giants' manager opening, and he will not be returning to Rocky Top.
The coach who brought Tennessee's baseball program out of the gutter and into national prominence will be the Giants' next manager, per ESPN.
While it was likely a tough decision for Vitello to leave Knoxville as the highest-paid coach in college baseball, Tennessee didn't do enough to keep him on Rocky Top, and Vols fans are furious.
Danny White right now. https://t.co/MnYvdnmR5c pic.twitter.com/VT1azCe321

To pile on, USA Today's Bob Mightengale reported that Vitello is set to take a pay cut in San Francisco. This is about a $300,000 pay cut to go from Tennessee to the Giants, which makes this decision even more puzzling for Tennessee fans frustrated by the administrative failure that let Vitello walk.
Tony Vitello, who was earning $3.3 million annually with salary and benefits, will be taking a paycut to manage the Giants in his new deal. The Giants also still owe fired Bob Melvin $4 million in 2026. https://t.co/XSzu5KZu0c

The frustration is going to go beyond letting Vitello leave, too. Vols fans and former players have already started pleading with White and Tennessee's administration to hire Associate Head Coach Josh Elander.
Despite the hope to hire Elander, it is clear Vols fans already expect White to hire Tennessee's next baseball coach outside the organization.
Danny White is about to hire someone other than Elander just so it can be “his hire” isn’t he….

I’ll be very curious to see what Danny White decides to do now for the baseball program.

Does he hire the player-loved and obvious choice in Josh Elander?
Or, does he “know better” and look elsewhere?
We shall see.
Just about every single player from the Vitello era is telling you Elander is a no brainer. Danny White going in a different direction will be the worst move he's ever made at Tennessee

This is just the tip of the iceberg if White botches this hire and passes on Elander, one of the top assistants in the country and beloved by the staff and players.
Elander can pick up right where Vitello left off and continue the momentum started by Vitello to keep Tennessee in national title contention. There's no guarantee an outside coach can come in and maintain the current players and recruitment level as the current staff, leaving a lot of question marks around the program.
White is set to have a press conference at 3:30 PM ET on Wednesday, possibly taking the time to signal the direction the program will go in the post-Vitello era. It is expected he will name pitching coach Frank Anderson the interim head coach while the Vols conduct a coaching search.
