Tennessee is college baseball's reigning, defending, undisputed national champion, and its title defense could not start any better.
With the Vols' sweep over St. Bonaventure, they start the season 16-0, the best start in program history. That seemed impossible after Tennessee won the title last year and sent a majority of its production to professional baseball.
The historic start breaks the previous record of the 2019 team's 15-0 start to the season. It has also been an impressive start statistically, with the offense more powerful than ever, leading the country in home runs and hitting eight home runs in 16 games.
Tennessee's pitching has also been dominant to start the year, with a 1.83 ERA after the first four weeks. Its team ERA and record are the best in the country.
In nine of their 16 games, the pitching staff has either shut out its opponent or only allowed one run. On the offensive end, Tennessee has been so dominant at the plate that the opponent's ERA is at 13.42 so far this year as Vols bats continue to wreck opposing pitching staffs.
The Vols also have the best team batting average in the country, with a .348 average. Tennessee entered last week as the No. 2 team and will enter this week as the deserving No. 1 team.
Tennessee is also one of two teams still undefeated after its fourth weekend series of the year, as Florida State joins the Vols as the only undefeated teams.
The Vols' conference schedule is on deck. Their final tune-up game will be a Tuesday matchup against West Georgia before they host Florida at Lindsey Nelson Stadium to start the SEC schedule.
