Tennessee could be on verge of losing fan-favorite DB to the transfer portal

This would not be ideal for Josh Heupel.

UPDATE: Boo Carter just announced on Twitter that he'll be back with Tennessee next season after all.

Are even more big-time changes coming for the Tennessee football team? Following the loss to Ohio State to close out the 2024 campaign, several players have entered the transfer portal. On top of that, running back Dylan Sampson declared for the NFL Draft.

Could another playmaker be ready to leave Knoxville this offseason and play elsewhere in 2025? As it turns out, Boo Carter may not be back in action for the Vols once Week 1 arrives next year. According to On3's Steve Wiltfong and Pete Nakos, Carter is planning to enter the transfer portal. However, he's talking with head man Josh Heupel and his staff before making a final decision.

Tennessee could end up losing Boo Carter to the transfer portal

Per Wiltfong and Nakos, the main reason Carter is considering leaving town is because he also wants to play on offense. Carter was a standout DB for the Vols defense in 2024, while also turning heads on special teams. However, he wants a chance to make some plays with the ball in his hands.

This past campaign for the Vols, the 5-11, 195-pounder posted 28 solo tackles and one interception. Late in the campaign, he was able to make some noise on special teams as a returner. With him showcasing some electric play, it'd only make sense for him to get some PT at wideout, right?

In the end, that's a decision that Heupel is going to have to make. With this latest transfer speculation, let's hope that Heupel can sit down with Carter and come to an agreement. It would be rough to see the talented youngster pack his bags and leave for a different program, especially if he ends up joining a different SEC squad.
