Monday morning delivered a gut punch for Tennessee fans, as Sam Leavitt officially chose LSU over the Vols. The former Michigan State and Arizona State quarterback was clearly Josh Heupel’s top, and really only, quarterback target in this Transfer Portal cycle, making the news sting even more in Knoxville.

Yes, the Vols did bring in Missouri quarterback Beau Pribula for a visit, but the main focus has always been Leavitt. Despite not landing Leavitt, Tennessee is still pursuing the talented quarterback. Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports reports that Tennessee hasn't given up and is still pushing for Sam Leavitt.

Tennessee is still making the push for Leavitt

Well, this is an encouraging sign on a tough day, but it could give Tennessee fans false hope. It's still unlikely that Leavitt ends up in Knoxville, but if there was no shot, Josh Heupel wouldn't waste his valuable time, right?

You could make the case that Heupel should pivot now and start working a serious backup plan before the clock runs out, but it’s also easy to see why he’s been so locked in on Leavitt. He’s simply that good. If Tennessee wants any chance at a flip, it won’t come cheap. The Vols would almost certainly have to up their offer to get back in this race.

LSU is an attractive option no doubt. Kiffin is a great offensive mind, and the Tigers have plenty of cash to build around Leavitt. Tennessee has a lot to sell too, with an offensive guru calling plays, a stud running back, and a boatload of good young wide receivers.

With most of the top transfer quarterbacks gone, Josh Heupel needs to figure it out soon, or Tennessee will be trotting out a freshman in George MacIntyre or Faizon Brandon next fall.
