Tennessee ranked in preseason Top 10 won't mean much for Rick Barnes if changes don't come

Defense has to be the name of the game for the Vols moving forward.

The official preseason AP Top 25 for men's hoops is out, and of course there were plenty of surprises that caught people off guard. As much as Vols fans might love Rick Barnes and Tennessee basketball, seeing UT ranked No. 8 definitely wasn't on our bingo guard, especially after the Vols got thwarted recently 86-70 in an exhibition matchup against Xavier.

In that loss, Barnes could not have been more disappointed with the lack of response from his guys over battling adversity. Defensively, Tennessee couldn't stop a nosebleed, with a lack of urgency standing out. In order for Barnes' group to stay in the Top 10 once the heart of regular season gets here, a focus on defense will need to arrive, while his high-profile transfers will need to deliver as well.

In that recent loss to Xavier, Wake Forest transfer Juke Harris was way off with his shooting, going 0-for-7 alone on 3-pointers. VCU transfer Terrence Hill Jr. led the way with his 22 points, but the overall performance still wasn't close to good enough.

Yes, it's only one loss, and the good thing is that it came in a preseason tilt in October. Still, the expectations are going to be sky-high for Tennessee this season, and with the Vols ranked No. 8 before the regular season does arrive, it adds even more pressure on the entire locker room to play at a high level. Especially with Tennessee hoping to get Barnes to the Final Four before he retires.

"Some of this, I'll be honest with you, you couldn't dream," a disgusted Barnes said after the Xavier defeat. "I mean, you don't let somebody ever run by you to get a layup, all those kind of things. But it's good. I really, I told the guys, I said, maybe now you'll realize what we've been harping on since you guys have been here. We're going to have to learn to guard at a high rate."

Looking at the rest of the Top 10, everyone is chasing No. 1 Florida, which was expected. Behind the Gators, you've got Duke, Illinois, UConn, Arizona, Michigan State, Texas, Tennessee, Virginia, and Houston. That's a loaded group, though the reigning national champs Michigan being No. 16 is also a bit of a stunner.

But for Tennessee, it's all going to be about continuing to refine things on both ends of the floor before the season-opener against Wofford arrives. The program has reached the Elite Eight in three straight years, which has been sensational. Despite that, the Final Four dreams have fallen short each time.

It's totally up in the air if 2026-27 will be the year when Barnes is able to get this team to the promised land. In order for that to happen, Tennessee must use this No. 8 preseason ranking as motivation to keep improving, and start living up to the hype — because if any additional performances come in like what we saw against Xavier, this Top 10 spot will look incredibly silly in only a couple of months.
