Tennessee has added its first player out of the transfer portal this cycle. Four-star Arizona transfer offensive lineman Wendell Moe has committed and signed with the Vols.
Moe joins a promising class of offensive linemen, with five-star plus David Sanders Jr. headlining the group. Moe was a three-star out of high school but came to Tennessee after three seasons at Arizona and two years as a starter. According to On3 Recruiting, he's a four-star transfer prospect.
This addition is Tennessee's first of the cycle, and it comes after the Vols lost eight players to the transfer portal. All eight players were former three-stars who most rarely saw playing time this year, so it won't be a huge hit for Tennessee after this season.
Tennessee has worked slowly in the transfer portal this cycle. Part of that could be because of the Vols' upcoming game against Ohio State in round one of the College Football Playoff.
No Playoff team has had more than three transfer commits so far this cycle, and Texas is the only team in the top 20 of portal recruiting rankings.
Moe comes to Tennessee with two years of remaining eligibility and will look to follow in the footsteps of previous transfer linemen Zalance Heard and John Campbell. They recently joined Tennessee through the portal and have been dominant at times this past season.
Look for the Vols to be more active in the portal as they progress through the week and after its first-round Playoff game. Josh Heupel has never rushed to sign a certain number of stars in any year since coming to Tennessee. He will bring in his guys that fit his system, and they will develop just as we've seen no less than a dozen other players do the same.
