Vols' Karlyn Pickens had awesome reaction to throwing fastest pitch in NCAA history

With both the Tennessee Vols men's and women's hoops programs in the Sweet Sixteen, it's easy to forget that student-athletes are turning heads in other sports on campus too. Take the Tennessee softball program for example.

On Monday night, the Vols were able to post a 3-2 win over the Arkansas Razorbacks. During the victory, all eyes were on standout pitcher Karlyn Pickens, who put together a strong performance for her team. Matter of fact, it was a historic one.

In the middle of the action, Pickens raised plenty of eyebrows in the best way possible when she fired off a pitch that reached 78 miles per hour. WOW. That number set the new top mark as the fastest softball pitch in NCAA history. After the win, Pickens was all smiles and she couldn't have been more humble about breaking the record too:

"There was a lot of emotions," an excited Pickens said. "At first I was just super excited to celebrate that with my team. It's way cooler finding out that way than you know finding out at home after the game. It was kind of emotional. All the work we've put in as a pitching staff, everyone that's helped coach me, It was just a surreal moment. It was really special."

That's just an awesome reaction from Pickens and things were only made better for her with the coaching staff and her teammates celebrating with her in style. Pickens has been a stud for Tennessee, as the junior was an All-American last season.

She has picked up where she left off, as Pickens posted a 22-7 record last season, with an impressive 1.12 ERA. Whenever she takes the field, Pickens is a threat to make things miserable for opposing hitters. With her reaching unreal speeds throwing too, it's only going to make it even more difficult for people to post a hit off of her. Good luck with that.
