Vols Football: Jakob Johnson Works At Tight End
By Zach Ragan
Sophomore Jakob Johnson started his career as a linebacker at Tennessee, but he’s also found work along the defensive line during his brief tenure on Rocky Top.
On Friday, Johnson found work at a different position. This time on the other side of the ball at tight end.
Butch Jones said on Friday after practice that Tennessee tried the German born Johnson at tight end, but wanted to see how he looked on film before he could comment on how he did at the position.
"Jones: “We tried Jakob Johnson a little bit today at tight end trying to get more competition at that spot. I want to see a little bit on video of how we did, but Jakob is an individual who will do anything to help the football team. “"
It’s not unusual for players to be moved around during camp and who knows if Johnson will stick at tight end. It’s way too early to tell.
Johnson received a decent amount of playing time at the end of last season after senior middle linebacker A.J. Johnson was suspended from the team. Johnson looked extremely raw at the position, perhaps leading the coaching staff to believe there’s a better use for him.
Even if Johnson sticks as a tight end, I wouldn’t expect to see him line up there much in games, unless the Vols sustain some injuries.
I believe you’ll most likely see Johnson revert back to linebacker and play mostly on special teams.
