Tennessee football: Vols sure do talk a lot with no accomplishments

Tennessee football is 3-4 and 0-4 in the SEC on the year. But the Volunteers still can’t help but keep talking themselves up as if they’ve done something.

Tennessee football is 3-4 on the year with two blowout losses. The Vols’ only win over a Power Five team is in double-overtime against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Their other two are against a 1-6 team and an FCS school.

Their coach is barely staying above water, they are underdogs against the Kentucky Wildcats, and a bowl game seems like a long shot. If anybody has no right to be talking right now, it’s Tennessee.

For some reason, though, they keep doing it. I don’t want to pick on Jarrett Guarantano too much since he’s a freshman and has been put in two tough situations. His first two starts are against arguably two of the three best defenses in the SEC.

But the Vols have still failed to score an offensive touchdown ever since he took the reigns. And he hasn’t led a scoring drive against an FBS team all year.

So his talking this week has been a bit much. In case you missed it, Guarantano promised a ‘magical’ finish to the end of the season on Sunday. That was on the heels of a 45-7 loss. Then, on Tuesday, he said the offense is ‘ready to explode.’

Okay, that’s a bit much. Rather than talking about what the offense is going to do, perhaps they should focus on getting a touchdown.

Unfortunately, though, this has been a recurring theme for Tennessee football.

We all remember Rashaan Gaulden flipping off Alabama fans after Daniel Bituli’s touchdown Saturday with his team down three scores.

To be fair, Gaulden, unlike Guarantano and the offense, was actually being productive. So that seemed more out of frustration. But you still shouldn’t do it when you’re down that much.

Before all of that, though, let’s remember Tyler Byrd. The slot receiver who has been utterly useless all year.

Remember when he tried to trash South Carolina cornerback Rashad Fenton ahead of the Vols’ showdown against the Gamecocks?

Yeah, Byrd had no catches in that game. And Tennessee had no touchdowns. Simply put, the Vols are doing a lot of talking for a team that has accomplished very little.

And at this point, you have to put it on Butch Jones. After all, this trash-talking is unbecoming of a team that competes for life championships.

Tennessee football may get back on track this weekend. But the failures of the season are unfixable. As a result, they have no right to talk lout to anyone the rest of the year. But they certainly don’t have the right at this moment.
