Tennessee football recruiting is now going after another junior college player. The Volunteers offered a scholarship to defensive tackle Savion Williams.

We all know Jeremy Pruitt is serious about winning now with Tennessee football. That’s why he brought in so many graduate transfers and junior college players this year, and it’s why he’s focusing on such guys in the future as well.

On Wednesday, the Vols extended another offer to a junior college player in the position they want to beef up the most: defensive line. Defensive tackle Savion Williams announced on his Twitter account that he received an offer from Tennessee.

Williams is currently not rated yet on Rivals. However, 247Sports ranks him as the No. 1 junior college defensive tackle in the nation. Coming from the Washington, D.C. area, Williams has played his last two years at Lackawanna Community College in Scranton, Pa.

At 6’4″ 315 pounds, he is fielding offers from numerous other major programs including the Georgia Bulldogs and the Penn State Nittany Lions. Other offers include the West Virginia Mountaineers, N.C. State Wolfpack, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Pitt Panthers and Maryland Terrapins.

Williams only played three games his first year of community college but figures to break out this year. He’s a guy who can get a push on the line but has to work on actually making plays. If not, he could probably move over to offensive line.

Playing high school in Maryland, which has surprisingly had a pretty good success rate of prospects at the next level, he totaled 52 tackles his senior year along with six sacks and three pass deflections, according to MaxPreps.

Simply put, Williams is a prospect who has potential. And with his size, he could probably fill the role of nose tackle in a 3-4 scheme very well. After all, the key to that is being able to get a push beyond all else.

If he can do that, Tennessee football may be after a very promising prospect. Williams could turn into a great pickup for them. And with Alexis Johnson and Shy Tuttle gone after this year, they need help and depth at defensive tackle in the future.
