SEC Power Rankings following Week 6 of 2018: Bye doesn’t help Vols at all
This may not make sense. The Kentucky Wildcats lost a game in overtime this past weekend to one of the teams that was in the bottom half of our SEC Power Rankings. But rather than dropped, they stayed right here. Well, let me explain.
By losing to the Florida Gators, we had to drop the LSU Tigers below Florida. But we had to keep Florida below Kentucky given the fact that the Wildcats have beaten the Gators on the road. Florida has to stay ahead of the Mississippi State Bulldogs, who along with the LSU Tigers have to stay ahead of the Auburn Tigers. So for now, Kentucky keeps its spot in these ranking.
On top of all of this, they only lost in overtime on the road. And it was due to a terrible offensive call on 3rd and short in overtime. If they give the ball to Benny Snell Jr., they may win the game. This defense is still pretty legit. In fact, it’s dominant.
That can’t be ignored, and as Mark Stoops’s team goes into its bye at 5-1, they still have plenty of chances to prove something. The SEC East is still in play, as coming off the bye, they get the Vanderbilt Commodores at home. A road game against the Missouri Tigers will then be huge, but if they can win both of those games, they’ll be the ones playing the Georgia Bulldogs to win the division. And by the way, that game is in Lexington.
