SEC Power Rankings following Week Seven of 2019: Vols finally make jump
After barely staying afloat for five years, the wheels appear to be coming off for Derek Mason as head coach of the Vanderbilt Commodores. A 34-10 loss at home to the UNLV Rebels now has this team at 1-5 on the year, and they remain 0-3 in the conference. This team looks even worse than Mason’s first team.
Having an FBS win kept them above the Tennessee Vols in our SEC Power Ranking for a while, but with UT not just getting an FBS win but a Power Five win over the weekend, we had to move Vandy to the worst team in the league. And honestly, it may not be even close, as they appear to be regressing right now.
The loss of Kyle Shurmur was always going to be difficult, and they do have a couple of offensive weapons. But this team overall is just bad, and Mason is supposed to be a defensive specialist, but that side of the ball continues to struggle. With only a 24-18 win over the Northern Illinois Huskies on their resume, things aren’t about to get any easier.
Coming up next for Vandy is a home game against the Missouri Tigers this week before visiting the South Carolina Gamecocks and Florida Gators the next two weeks, which is almost certain to drop them to 1-8 on the season. The Kentucky Wildcats and ETSU Bucs at home are their only real chances to look respectable.
