Tennessee football: Vols fans’ 2019 conference championship week rooting guide
6. Conference USA Championship
UAB Blazers over Florida Atlantic Owls (Florida Atlantic -7.5)
Saturday, Dec. 7 at 1:30 p.m. ET; CBS Sports Network; FAU Football Stadium; Boca Raton, Fla.
Before anything happens, Tennessee football needs to be able to make the case that it has a better resume than the Texas A&M Aggies. Both teams are 7-5, and although the Vols have a better record than A&M in the conference at 5-3 compared to 4-4, A&M gets more loved. To be fair, it’s well-deserved. They have played a brutal schedule.
However, one point in UT’s favor would be the UAB Blazers upsetting the Florida Atlantic Owls. That would mean that the Vols did score a win against a 10-win team that won its conference. Even if it’s a Group of Five program, it’s a very solid point in their favor. In fact, despite A&M having a tougher schedule, the Vols would then clearly have more decent wins.
Remember, the only team the Aggies beat who are bowl eligible this year is the Mississippi State Bulldogs. They are only 6-6, and the Vols beat them too. If, on top of that, UT beat a 10-win Group of Five Conference Champion along with the Kentucky Wildcats, who finished 7-5, they could sell being the better SEC pick than A&M.
Overall, this game is not likely to move the needle too much. It doesn’t put enough distance between the Vols and Texas A&M in terms of resume. But it is a way for Vol fans to sell another quality win if UAB pulls it off.
