10. 2016 Music City Bowl vs. No. 24 Nebraska Cornhuskers

Derek Barnett sets school record for career sacks

Tennessee Volunteers win 38-24

Honestly, this play by itself shouldn’t be in the top 10. Tennessee football was already in control of the Nebraska Cornhusker 38-24, and there was nothing unique about it. However, the commonality of it, ironically, is why it was able to make the list.

Derek Barnett had been a sacks machine for Rocky Top for three years. He had 10 sacks in 2014, 10 sacks in 2015 and 12 sacks during the regular season of 2016. Pretty much everybody was certain that the Music City Bowl would be his last game, as he was about to become a very high NFL Draft pick.

As a result, the suspense in this game was whether or not he would surpass Reggie White’s career sacks record on Rocky Top. He only needed one to do it, and this would be his final chance. Well, he kept knocking on the door the entire game but couldn’t manage to get the sack.

Finally, late in the fourth quarter, Bob Shoop lined him up on the other side, and he came away with the sack, breaking White’s school record in only three years of action. It may have been a standard sack, but the Vols had to take a timeout to celebrate him breaking the record. If the play makes that big of an impact, there’s no way we can leave it off this list.
